The Domino Effect

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Thu, Mar 14, 2013

You've probably done this yourself. Set up a line of dominos - knock one over and they all follow. There are TONS of crazy domino videos on YouTube and elsewhere. In life, the domino effect is a chain reaction that occurs when one change causes a similar change nearby.

Two weeks ago, I received an email from an IT hiring manager at a Houston company. They needed PC Technicians to start in ONE WEEK! I sent a MyComputerCareer graduate on an interview the next day, Tuesday. He came to us unemployed and was looking for a way into a computer career. On Thursday, he was hired! Last Monday he started!!! This graduate was so well qualified for the position, and prepared for the interview, the company decided to hire THREE MORE MyComputerCareer students!

MyComputerCareer is more than getting you prepared for a computer certification. We get you prepared for a computer CAREER. It's IT skills, applied knowledge, interview know-how, and the success our graduates have demonstrated in the field. How would you like to be the next domino to fall into a computer career? Take our FREE Career Evaluation and see if this is something for you. It's the first step to a better life.

Success Breeds Success As MyComputerCareer Partners With Businesses

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Wed, Jun 13, 2012

Raleigh CSDWe had an awesome turnout in Raleigh from students and companies for the MyComputerCareer Student Career Fair. Nine local companies were in attendance with gifts for the students and huge displays. The students were thrilled to see just how successful it was.

Two students were already offered jobs at our number one client, who was at the Fair. We also had two students start working for them last week through their veterans program (they do not have to wait on background checks in this program). Here is a little history on these two:

Student #1 is a retired veteran with a lot of management experience and his own computer repair business on the side. When he was laid off, he decided to go with his passion for IT. This student interviewed last week and started working for the client on Monday in a full-time, permanent IT position. He told me after his first couple days that he loves the job and it was just the right fit.

Student #2 was a truck driver before enrolling at MyComputerCareer. He also interviewed last week with our client and started work in his new IT job on Monday as Technical Support. On his first day at work, he called me to say, "my manager needs to hire two more people immediately and I told him about MyComputerCareer!" We were able to get him three students with CompTIA A+ certification within 30 minutes. Two of them were offered positions!

How would you like to participate in an IT Job Career Fair??? Check out the MyComputerCareer program, read the success stories, and take the FREE Career Evaluation to see if this is something for you.

Reputation Management Gets Our Students IT Jobs

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Wed, Jun 06, 2012

Houston CSDI thought I had spoken with every staffing company in Houston, but not the one that called me last week. They have heard of MyComputerCareer, 'though. The recruiter that contacted me said he knew us from some of our students. These students worked for a company that he was staffing for and had all been doing a really good job.

It says a great deal about the type of service we are providing to the community here in Houston. To get a call from a company that knows us because of our students is remarkable.

This recruiter had a client that needed techs to build and test laptops, desktops and servers.  We spent some time together and I provided him with some students. Thus far he has called and interviewed every student I sent him and they are all moving forward in the hiring process. The problem is he wants MORE candidates!!! What a problem to have!

How would you like to be an in-demand candidate for an IT Job??? Check out the MyComputerCareer program, read the success stories, and take the FREE Career Evaluation to see if this is something for you.

Getting An IT Job Is A Numbers Game

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Mon, Apr 30, 2012

If you've worked in sales, you've probably been told "it's a numbers game" - meaning the successful salespeople are successfull because they're the ones making tons of calls and meeting tons of prospects. The greatest salesperson in the World won't have a lick of success if they don't pick up the phone. It's like that here at MyComputerCareer Career Services.

Raleigh CSDWe're not content to just feed resumes to the hiring managers we know and have had success with. That wouldn't be fair to our students. Very recently, we made a lot of progress adding several companies to our career fair. Overall, about a dozen companies, about half new, will have hiring managers out to meet (and hire!) our students.

What this means to our students is very simple; MORE OPPORTUNITY! Monday we had a recent graduate start with a HUGE company here in the Research Triangle Park. He came to us with a very limited techincal background. A few weeks back, a recruiter for this company contacted me seeking a technical trainer. I passed along his resume and he was hired, for a permanent position, at $44K - DOUBLE what he was making previously. Positions like this are rarely advertised on job sites. It's our relationships, built on hard work and the value of our students, that get these jobs. We would love to find a new IT job for you.

When It Comes To Getting An IT Job, The Quick Eat The Slow

Posted by Claude Green on Mon, Apr 30, 2012

A few weeks ago when I arrived at the MyComputerCareer campus, there was already a manager from the software company upstairs waiting for me. He said he was in a panic and needed help!

It turns out he had been recently put in charge of staffing a project and needed resumes FAST! We discussed his requirements and I suggested he give me 30 minutes to put together some candidates and to come back so we could review the resumes.

Houston CSDHe was back 30 minutes later for the resumes. About an hour after that, I saw one of our students in a suit and tie on the way upstairs to interview! WHAT!!!!  That's right!!!  They had already done phone screens and were now bringing OUR students in for interviews that day. Another hour went by and ANOTHER student showed up in, you guessed it, suit and tie. Not long after that, he came running into MyComputerCareer to announce he was offered the job!!! This student, not yet graduated, started his new IT job the following Monday at $50K in a full-time permanent position providing software support!!!

Not only do we help our students learn the IT skills hiring managers need, we literally put their resumes in the hands of the people hiring. Isn't that awesome???

Resume Building For A Computer Career

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Mon, Apr 30, 2012

Dallas CSDThis week a student told me he locked down an IT job with a Fortune 100 company! Even though it's an entry level position, he will be installing routers, hubs, and switches - and programming, testing, and turning up equipment. The hiring manager even said he could take home some old equipment to help study for his CCNA. The student was really excited and I am too! What an AWESOME resume builder and a great start to a NEW CAREER!

MyComputerCareer Career Services Rocks - Persistence Pays!

Posted by Bruce Ackerman on Tue, Feb 07, 2012

Claude Green, Houston CSDHouston Campus - Career Services Director, Claude Green:

I had a meeting yesterday with Harry B. and Calvin S. with E** Staffing.  Harry is the owner and Calvin is the IT guru.  We met to talk about IT job opportunities in the Houston area.

Of course IT candidates will not be a problem as MyCC will be providing them with a stream of skilled and certified candidates as the job orders start pouring in.  They also have an office in Dallas so there should be some opportunities for our Dallas campus as well.

I have been working with B*** Staffing for over a year now and it took that long for us to finally get a student placed with them.  Once that happened we were able to place a second student with them almost immediately. They gave me two job orders today, one with an energy company and one with an oil and gas company and pleaded with me to help them fill both positions.  No problem!!

Over a year ago I decided to cold call companies in our building to see if there was a need for IT candidates.  I came across a company called Mob*** and met with the IT Director.  They develop software for oil and gas companies and do a lot of work for EXXON.  I stayed with it and continued sending them resumes from time to time over the last 10 months and I finally got another bite.  They are now looking for a software analyst, someone to provide support for the software they develop.  They have interviewed a couple more of our students this week and should be making a decision on Monday as to who they wish to hire.

Todd Mankin, Dallas CSDDallas Campus - Career Services Director, Todd Mankin

This week was a productive one for me as I spent a bit more time out seeing clients and drumming up new business. I didn’t get as many job orders as I would have liked to but had a few meetings that I think are going to pay off handsomely in the coming months.

C*** interviewed four students this week and are going to make an offer to at least one of them on Monday or Tuesday of next week. They have three positions open and we are hoping that MyCC students are chosen for all of them.  I expect there are other ways for MyCC and [the company] to partner very soon. Thanks Autumn!

V*** interviewed Jim M. this week and the interview went very well. Jim told me that the manager gave him the story about how I placed him as a NOC Tech there 12 years ago. Jim said that 3 of the 4 managers and employees that he met told him that I placed them there when I was recruiting. I found that amusing and humbling at the same time. I am really hoping that Jim gets in the door and helps champion our students in. This could be a huge break!

This week E. M. interviewed with [two companies]. He is torn at this point because [one] really liked him and may make him an offer, but [the other] has already made him an offer and he has accepted it. I told him that either way he is in a great position. Two excellent job opportunities in the same week! Exciting for him.

Shareefah Dickens, Raleigh CSDRaleigh Campus - Career Services Director, Shareefah Dickens

Week 5 of 2012

The Raleigh campus has had to make a few adjustments this week to accommodate students.  We had the cover-letter and interview workshop this week.  With the large class that recently started, I have decided to have workshops on Monday and Tuesday to split the class.  The new class actually has a good amount of people on campus on Tuesday.  They were driving from up to 2 hours away to get to class!

My goal this week was to make sure H** were on board with hiring the three students they extended offers to last year.  I took doughnuts over to their office and decided to ask the manager out to lunch on the spot.  Well it just so happen she was available.  We discussed why the process was moving so slow and she advised me to let the students know she would do everything in her power to speed things up.  Well, Bobby S., Douglas H., and Emir D. received their offer letters yesterday and will start on Monday 2-6-11.  They are all really excited because this will be their first opportunity to work onsite as Helpdesk Technicians.

I met with [my contact] over at M*** to discuss how we can continue our partnership.  The company has really expanded in this area and she is a great contact for Raleigh. She is open to participating in campus activities and helping to market our students.

Success Story:  Jeff C. took an entry level IT position at IBM over 6 months ago to stay in the field while he completed his certifications. He was offered a position with [a new company] making 19.00/hr which was an upgrade from his IBM position.  He was not hesitant at all to start this position.  He walked in the door on Tuesday.  Chris Mullan helped to make this happen and plans to get more of our students upgraded to this from the IBM contracts.

Bruce W. and Jeffrey L. are now confirmed to start with C*** on Monday as Technical Support Engineers. Until next week.
