Success Breeds Success As MyComputerCareer Partners With Businesses

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Wed, Jun 13, 2012

Raleigh CSDWe had an awesome turnout in Raleigh from students and companies for the MyComputerCareer Student Career Fair. Nine local companies were in attendance with gifts for the students and huge displays. The students were thrilled to see just how successful it was.

Two students were already offered jobs at our number one client, who was at the Fair. We also had two students start working for them last week through their veterans program (they do not have to wait on background checks in this program). Here is a little history on these two:

Student #1 is a retired veteran with a lot of management experience and his own computer repair business on the side. When he was laid off, he decided to go with his passion for IT. This student interviewed last week and started working for the client on Monday in a full-time, permanent IT position. He told me after his first couple days that he loves the job and it was just the right fit.

Student #2 was a truck driver before enrolling at MyComputerCareer. He also interviewed last week with our client and started work in his new IT job on Monday as Technical Support. On his first day at work, he called me to say, "my manager needs to hire two more people immediately and I told him about MyComputerCareer!" We were able to get him three students with CompTIA A+ certification within 30 minutes. Two of them were offered positions!

How would you like to participate in an IT Job Career Fair??? Check out the MyComputerCareer program, read the success stories, and take the FREE Career Evaluation to see if this is something for you.

Getting An IT Job Is A Numbers Game

Posted by Ralph Giovenco on Mon, Apr 30, 2012

If you've worked in sales, you've probably been told "it's a numbers game" - meaning the successful salespeople are successfull because they're the ones making tons of calls and meeting tons of prospects. The greatest salesperson in the World won't have a lick of success if they don't pick up the phone. It's like that here at MyComputerCareer Career Services.

Raleigh CSDWe're not content to just feed resumes to the hiring managers we know and have had success with. That wouldn't be fair to our students. Very recently, we made a lot of progress adding several companies to our career fair. Overall, about a dozen companies, about half new, will have hiring managers out to meet (and hire!) our students.

What this means to our students is very simple; MORE OPPORTUNITY! Monday we had a recent graduate start with a HUGE company here in the Research Triangle Park. He came to us with a very limited techincal background. A few weeks back, a recruiter for this company contacted me seeking a technical trainer. I passed along his resume and he was hired, for a permanent position, at $44K - DOUBLE what he was making previously. Positions like this are rarely advertised on job sites. It's our relationships, built on hard work and the value of our students, that get these jobs. We would love to find a new IT job for you.

Tags: IT jobs, Career Services Updates, Computer Careers, Success Stories student Phil Smeby shares his success story

Posted by Bill Sallada on Thu, Jul 21, 2011

A few weeks ago, out of the blue, Phil Smeby responded to a routine follow-up email from the Career Services Department in Raleigh.  He also included, as an after thought, a written account of his experiences at the school in case we might want to add it to our website.

Are you kidding Phil?  Of course we'd love to add it to the site.  Phil is a great student and we glad to have been able to help him begin to acheive his goals in life.   Without further ado, here's Phil's uncut, unedited testimonial that he emailed to us:

"My name is Phil Smeby, and I am an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran. After being away from my family for approximately three years, my wife and I decided that I needed to leave the military. With an economy that is still in recovery I soon found myself unemployed and looking for work. The trouble that I had was that even though I was qualified for the jobs I was applying for, I found it extremely difficult to get a call back from the hiring manager, yet alone get an interview. I went through a couple of months where I did not get a single call back from anywhere I had applied, and I realized that I needed to head back to school to get some tangible skills that I could use to market myself in today’s competitive job market.

I had just gotten accepted into a different school when I decided to attend an open house meeting at with a family member. The first thing that stood out to me was the enthusiasm by everyone on the staff. After the open house meeting, I decided that my other school would have to wait, and that I would attend as it is designed to help people who are seeking a career change.

I started a week later on February 19, 2011, and after five weeks I received my first Microsoft certification. One of my greatest memories of is taking my first certification test and passing it. I now had something tangible from my education at After another five weeks I was able to take another Microsoft test, however, I did not pass it on the first attempt. Nevertheless, because has a “test pass guarantee” I was able to take the certification test again, and I was able to easily pass. Eleven weeks into the school, I was now eligible to work with career services.

The Career services department with is phenomenal. They work with your individual circumstances to help you land a job whether you are an IT guru or an IT newcomer like myself. After I finished my mock interview with career services they immediately sent out my résumé to various companies. The very next day I woke up to my cell phone ringing from one of the companies that had received my résumé, where I answered some simple IT questions and scheduled an interview. Immediately afterward I got a phone call from career services telling me that they had sent out my résumé, and I should be receiving a call from this company. I was so excited to inform my career services counselor that I had already talked with them and scheduled an interview. Every day I was getting a call from various companies wanting to interview me for work in the IT field.

Career services doesn’t stop with helping you get your résumé into the hands of potential employers, they also spend a great deal of time helping you learn how to be proactive in your job search. This approach gives you much more control over where you could potentially work, and working together with your career services counselor ensures a higher chance of success.

Using the tools given to me by career services, I used a contact I had to help me get an interview with a company called Clairvia. I was contacted by the hiring manager of Clairvia the next morning and scheduled an interview that week. The interview was conducted by three different managers and lasted the whole morning; however, I was offered a job right on the spot, which I gladly accepted. It took me a week and a half of working with career services to secure my dream job. I immediately called career services, and they helped me cancel my remaining interviews. definitely gave me the skills I needed to enter a new career field, and I look forward to completing the advanced courses at It is clear that the instructors, Bob, Charles, and John have a passion for IT, and they truly go far beyond what is required of them to make sure that you feel comfortable with the course materials. When I told Bob that Clairvia needed someone with SQL database experience, he offered to setup a workshop on SQL for me to ensure my success. He offered the same to all the other students. I have not yet seen an instructor who cared so much for the success of his students. While the course material at is geared to help you pass the certifications, Bob will constantly drill into your minds how everything works in the “real world”.

The difference in my life since working at Clairvia has been dramatic. While I cannot claim to make a six digit salary, neither do I expect to, my wife has been able to quit her job to stay at home with our two children. We are also currently purchasing our first home, 2700 square feet with five bedrooms, which is a huge improvement over our current two bedroom apartment. Best of all, we are no longer living paycheck to paycheck. I have accomplished all this in just 14 weeks, and with the advanced courses that I have just started, I now feel in control of my career and my life.

I would definitely recommend to anyone who is serious about a career change into IT. The course work is designed to get you into a job as soon as possible, which is what makes different from a local community college or university. However, it is once you get your first job where the program really shows its strength because you can use your work experience combined with the education of to put yourself on track to enter senior positions in the IT world."

MyComputerCareer IT Jobs: A day in the week

Posted by Bruce Ackerman on Mon, Feb 21, 2011

Here's an example of a weekly report from one of our Career Services Directors reporting on students getting IT jobs. It clearly illustrates the success stories that happen for career changers when they follow the MyComputerCareer program and believe in themselves. Congratulations to those mentioned below and all students at MyComputerCareer that are working hard and achieving their career goals!

Report from Chris Mullen, Career Services Director, Raleigh campus:

As I signed off last week, I mentioned: “Career Services has high hopes for next week – it could be a big one!!!”  I felt good going into the week, but had no idea just how big of a week it would really be – and it all started on Monday.  Literally every day this week I had at least one student come to tell me they had landed a position

David S. landed over at IBM just 2 months into the (MyComputer Career) program – he was formerly a bus boy for an Olive Garden.  He walked into campus at around 6:10 on Monday evening smiling from ear to ear – “Thank you so much,” he said.  “My Grandfather actually told me he was proud of me.”  Talk about great stuff!!  This is the first step of big things to come for him and I am just really excited to be a part of it.

Another big time success was that of Jess N.  Jess came to me about a month ago to finalize the mock interview so he could get moving with finding a new opportunity.  Two weeks into the process, he came to me frustrated, telling me he was getting calls but wasn’t moving forward with anything.  His reason:  lack of experience.  He had come from an automotive mechanic background, and his thought was if I don’t have the experience, I won’t be considered for the position.  I told him – they have your resume in hand and know what skills you bring to the table.  Why would they be calling if they didn’t have interest??  The power of positive thinking goes a long way and this all made sense to Jess.  The very next day, he got a call for an IT support role that didn’t pan out, but he thought he really did well explaining what skills he had that would translate.

The following Monday, I got his resume over to Joel, one of my contacts with The Select Group, for a position that they were working on.  Joel immediately fell in love with Jess’s attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes to be successful in IT and promptly submitted him to another client of his – Quintiles – where Jess interviewed and got the job.

He came in to discuss the new position with me and his excitement about the role.  He thanked me, but I told him to thank himself – without his positive approach, he would have never even gotten an opportunity to move forward.  The same can be said for most of our students.  If you have a positive outlook on everything, good things will come, and in this case, everything worked out for Jess, as he sees Quintiles as a potential home for him.  I am really excited for Jess!!!

Plenty of interviews are still pending and we have another student that is on the brink of getting his “fly out date” for Afghanistan – more to come…

Hiring for IT Jobs Jumps in North Carolina

Posted by Bruce Ackerman on Thu, Sep 16, 2010

According to a recent article in the Raleigh News and Observer, Openings for Information Technology (IT) jobs in North Carolina took a giant leap forward from July to August--up 14.9%. Citing a report from the NC Technology Assn. (NCTA), the number of IT job openings in the state during this period represents a 400% increase over the same period last year. This is great news for students and others seeking opportunity in the growing IT industry.

The North Carolina numbers substantially outpace national IT technology openings which increased just 3.3% in July-to-August timeframe. Recent data published by NCTA also indicates that IT employment in the Raleigh-Cary metro is up 6% over last year, and up 8% in Durham. Career Services in Raleigh has confirmed a substantial improvement in hiring compared with 2009.

Back to School: Learn to Earn @

Posted by Bruce Ackerman on Tue, Aug 10, 2010

Back to School Advice for Parents From

Back to schoolIt's back to school time. Students everywhere (and their parents) are stalking the shelves for study supplies, designer jeans, and the appropriate name brand back packs, lunchpails, and other accoutrements they need to win the approval, not only of their teachers, but more importantly, their friends and peers. It's a time-honored ritual and seasonal marketing bonanza that provides a nice jolt of economic activity to jump start the hopefully, hot 4th quarter retail season.

But while you're trekking the aisles of your local Wal Mart wondering how you're going to pay for all this back to school baggage if some of the "economic stimulus" doesn't trickle down to your house pretty soon, consider this....

Maybe YOU should be heading back to school, too!

It's an uncontested fact that there's a high correlation between education and income. In general, the more formal education you have--the more credentials and degrees--the higher salary you're likely to command. From a pragmatic standpoint, knowledge IS power--EARNING power; the more you learn, the more you earn.

In no field is this more true than in the computer industry. Because there's a high premium on specific technical knowledge and skills like programming, network administration, or database management, subject matter experts in these and other areas can do very well professionally and financially, thank you very much. And EVERY organization relies on computers so IT professionals are always in demand. All you need are the appropriate credentials, some demonstrable experience, and access to the IT job market.

Here's the best news of all: It doesn't take a 4-year college degree to gain the skills you'll need for a high-paying job in Information Technology. At, you can obtain both the technical skills and IT industry certifications from Microsoft and others that will take you a long, long way in your career. And you can do it in as little as three short months with classes just two nights a week!

But that's not all. Due to an intensive hands-on training protocol,  you'll achieve a higher level of competence and skill than in any more protracted program we know of. You'll gain real experience that will serve you in the interview and on the job. AND we'll help find you a job!

In other words, in a few short months, you could be well on your way to higher earnings, a more challenging, satisfying career, and a way to step up your kids' fashion labels (not to mention your own) from "Made in China" to "Calvin Klein." They'll love you for it!

IT Jobs Increasing Despite Slow Economy, IT Crossing Says

Posted by Bruce Ackerman on Mon, Jul 12, 2010

IT jobs grow faster in Dallas & other 2nd-tier cities According to Information Technology Crossing, an IT job board that aggregates job postings from numerous major sources from across the Web and across the country (U.S.), demand for IT personnel continues to rise. In a recent press release, the company cited 89,000 new job listings in just the last seven days. "With companies in all sectors increasingly using...more advanced software applications...there will always be a good demand for systems administrators," the article said.

The article also indicates that the lion's share of the IT job growth is coming in areas outside the so-called Tier-One cities like New York, Washington DC, or Silicon Valley. Instead, the best markets for new graduates are in locales not typically thought of as technology hubs--cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Philadelphia and other "second-tier" locations.

That's more good news for students of with computer training centers in Raleigh, NC as well as Dallas and Houston, TX where IT job growth is significantly outpacing the economy as a whole and other major metropolitan areas.
